Does anyone use Virtual Folders?

Unfortunately, I've been tasked with making Virtual Folders perform reasonably. So far all I've discovered is that it's the worst designed module ever. It looks like I'll have to rewrite half of it to make it useful.

Has anyone else bothered to get this module working?
