Does anyone know what Quicktime does to modems

Hello. I am have an HP6630 Pavilion with Softk56 Pci Modem 2.11.06 which was upgraded from 2.08.02. When I had the earlier version 2.08.02, I had a speed of 44,000bps. I downloaded Quicktime 5.0 and uninstalled it. Now my modem only goes up to 36000bps or 37333bps. There is also interference when my Sister's computer goes on. For example, when I am still dialed up the websites stop responding for a few minutes. Another problem is when I dial up and her computer is already on, my speed is at 44000bps. Her foldout phone is plugged into the back of her computer. She will not let me unplug anything. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would also like to know if Quicktime interferes with system files.
