I have checked the net and there are a couple of good ones that I found, but they all cost money. Whilst I am not averse to paying the couple of hundred bucks for the tool(s), they are all license based, so buying say 15 or 20 then becomes difficult.

I wondered if there is anything out there that recovers corrupted Excel files for free.

Well, often, opening the file directly from Word may open the file as a Word table. Then you just Table-Select table, copy, and paste back into Excel. Formulas must be recreated, and it only works on the first worksheet (I think).

Otherwise, no, I don't know. Check out the FAQ on Office document corruption. Brainbench MVP for Microsoft Word

Thanks Dreamboat. I opened the file in Word and it still looks a mess. I have run it through a tool (demo version of Excel Recovery) and the tool is able to resolve the corruption, but Word (or saving to a SYLK file type, or using the Office Resource utility, or using the macro that Microsoft provide), do not resolve the corruption.

Looks like I am going to have to shell out a few thousand dollars......*sigh*

I'll send it to the "...home.com" address. Its one file, but multiple worksheets.

In the past we have had to wait anything up to 3 weeks to get the file restored, by which time, we are three weeks behind (large organisation, lots of beaurocracy and wringing of hands when you ask them to do something as complicated as restore a file - do I sound annoyed??!!).

Thanks for your help!

Okay, but then I gotta go home, send it to work, and you won't get it until tomorrow. If that's cool with you, it's cool with me. What do you think I'm going to do? Try opening it with Lotus 123 Millenium. Sometimes, one brand of software does not see the file corruption of another brand. OH, that reminds me!!! Have you tried the first download on this page? I tried the tool on the link you sent. It didn't work, because it looks like it saves VB related stuff. My spreadsheet is mostly data with some formulas on the first sheet.

As for timing - its cool with me!

Thanks a lot for your help!

This may be very usefull if you just need to recover the data from a corrupt excel spreadsheet,
open a blank work book, then write a formula to the dead work book such as "='C:\my documents\[turn around time.xls]Sheet2'!A1" then fill down and/or across to return the data!

Thanks for that ETID - tried that too. Just get the same old garbage. Worth noting though as it has worked for me in the past.
