I'm realtivly new to the web world. I am setting up webpages on an intranet but many of the files I need are in UNIX format on a UNIX machine. I want to be able to call the file and have it automatically turned into html when viewed by the browser. This will need to work both in Netscape 4.x and IE 5. Can anyone help??
some of the files have been created in "vi" so I guess would be considered ascii/text. I have also got excel files that are sitting in the UNIX world on the server- ok if you serve "as is" to IE 5 but do not work if you use Netscape. Others are log files generated by the system.
Let me know if you need more specific info.
Appreciate any help/advice you can give.
So you are just wanting to print plain text to the screen?

Yes, in some cases it will be just plain text, but in the case of the excel files they are spreadsheets that have several formulas, and color coded areas incorporated and so have to be seen as created. This works in IE5 but not netscape.
Not everyone calling these files has a PC's some only have xterminals!
Hope this is helpful! Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
If all you are trying to do is have the Excel file viewable in HTML format (graphs and all) then I know Excel 97 (and I'm sure the more recent versions) has an option under the file menu: "Save as HTML."
We use this all of the time at my office as we convert plenty of documents over to HTML. I know that this will then be viewable by all browsers, PC and UNIX based. As for viewing via lynx on a plain terminal, I'm not sure as I have not seen a plain text terminal in over a year...
I hope this helps some.
DUH!! I Can't believe I didn't think of that...Ive used MS Word to convert SEVERAL of my Poems, etc. into HTML files; I should've been able to guess that the rest of the MS Office family would do the same :(
Oops!
