I have a particular aversion in particular to 'pop up'.
This has got to be the most irritating form of advertising invented - at least during commercial breaks on TV I can go and make coffee or otherwise occupy myself.

I see also on this tek-tip page as I write - a banner advertising some MCSE stuff for $5.99 - fine if you're in the US - no use to me in the UK.

I don't think the completely borderless nature of the it self to targeted advertising.

I guess the effectiveness of the MCSE ad on the Tek-Tips page header is probably a function of whether your using the site from outside the U.S. is the exception or the rule.

I, for one, am willing to put up with ads if it means that I don't have to pay for the privilege of using a site. That has always been my biggest beef with AOL -- I have to pay for the privilege to read their ads.

AOL keyword "mps" - allows you to turn off the ads. they're not that bad you know!

I personally think that non-intrusive ads don't work as well as a quality product that I hear about in the news or in an article.

I use Mozilla Firebird which incorporates popup blocking and don't bother with any other type of browser. To me popups is the plague of the internet and I will never buy through a web site that used a popup.

As for banner type advertising I find myself hating the flashy ones. I like some bland color ones like the OSDN ones on slashdot which are the first ads I clicked on in over a year.

Flashy animated ads just p@$$ me off so much I often resize windows or scroll down or something to get them out of my view. I also block certain urls so I don't have to bother seeing those ugly Gifs ever again (another feature of Firebird is block images from this server, try it)!!

Other ads I actually clicked on was the google ads. I find some of those (depending on the words they use) worthy of my time.

the advertisers really don't care. All they need is .01% of the users who get that pop-up to click on it and go to that web page. Does not matter if you don't buy anything, the advertiser gets paid by how many people visit the clients web page (same goes for spam). To track it, you'll notice that you never go to a home page, you goto some special add page so the web site that creates that popup on your screen will get paid for directing you to this other party.

The following is a sample of HOSTS names are the common advertisers host names. Place this in your HOSTS file, the pop-ups will still happen, but they will be blank pages since they are directer to your local system. This will cut down the bandwidth they steal from you do download what ever graphic they want to bug you with and will rob those jerks of their pay check for directing you to something you realy have no care for, because gosh darn it, I am happy with my size as it is nor do I have any problems getting it up.

Send me e-mail and I can send you the entire hosts file (it was to big to post here)

The other solution would be to buy one of those pop-up killers that advertize in pop-ups.

As far as tek-tips banner adds, my company used it for a couple of months, didn't produce any leads so my boss chose not to continue. Some times it works, some times it doesn't. My intention of getting my companies name on tek-tips was to get the company name known in more areas than just California, USA. And when I visit pages hosted in the UK, I find adds for UK products in UK prices. Same goes for french and german sites, I'm just not sure what they say since I can read or speak either language. So when you visit tek-tips, a site hosted in the US, of course you'll see adds in US dollars not in pounds or the Euro. This doesn't mean you can't purchase the product if your interested in it they will convert the curency for you

I just can't seem to get back my IntelliSense

Popups are kind of a game for me. I'm getting pretty good at closing them before the page even loads..

I have never purchased anything because of a pop-up ad and never will. I don't know anyone who ever has. Why do they exist--other than to invoke computer rage?

Jim

If they aren't much of a problem, why are there so many popup stoppers/ad blocking software packages available, both commercial and free?

John

I don't buy anything from pop-ups, or sapm, and never will, either, but there are always some gullible people out there.

just a side note...

when encountered with relentless popups for bad sites and others that have scripts that are called on page unload, just click on the top bar of the first window and hit esc, this will stop the page from loading and effectively kill the scripts from being called; then just close the window.

thats my way, anyway.

Does advertising on the Web really work? In a single word - YES! Personally I find it is more a matter of ethics on the part of the company doing the advertising and of the company/person who has that ad on their site/page.
Is there a problem with a company placing a banner or even pop-up ad on their own site for a special promotion they are running? Or even a banner for a product related to the products the hosting site offers? In my opinion NO.
But I find it simple bad business practices to have countless pop-ups, rotating banners, bright flashy ads on a site simply to try to get a little money. That type of advertising is very unlikely to bring any significant increase in sales volume and/or increased visitors to a site.
Just my opinion
Michael
