I am in a position that may see me getting a security clearance. Does this help with regard to getting a CISSP?

No Sorry as it does not match the domains... all it may do is prove integrity when you send in your cv for approval

Security clearance does not always prove integrity. It simply proves that you have that particular clearance, whatever it may be (I've had secret clearance for more than 4 years now).

No, it has nothing to do with meeting the experience requirements per ISC2. Think of it this way; some janitors at certain military and government installations have clearance, but that in no way qualifies them to sit for the CISSP. I guess the real question could be, what's the job function of the job that might require you to get the clearance. It might very well be a good step in the right direction for gaining the needed experience. Good luck.

To make a long story short, how does one go about acquiring these types of clearances (DoD) if the individual's employer does not require one currently?

It would be nice to have one (or more) just in case...

And the answer is you don't. You can't get clearance just because you want it. There has to be a clearly defined reason for it. Employment, particular contracts, and similar things allow you to get it.

To get cleareance you require a sponsoring authority i.e (DOD) US (MOD) UK or other agencies...

So basically you only get clearance if you get a job that require it

Thank you for the information!

One of my goals in the next 18 months is to open my own software company and I want to bid on DoD contracts. I am currently looking into some registrations such as, but limited to, SBA, Minority-owned, etc. So given this, since many DoD contracts are sensitive, how can I go about acquiring a certain type of clearance?

Do you see my situation?
