does a local .ost file speed up mail retrieval?

We are using local .ost files because our backup software does not support restoring single mailboxes and for redundancy. I haven't had time to test but my initial thought was that this would speed up mail access. Is this correct?

Speeds up existing mail access but can slow down new email access.

Instead of spending time setting up osts and training users, why not buy the Exchange backup option for your backup software?

We have the Exchange live backup enabler for Legato Networker but this still doesn't let us restore a single mailbox, like you could do with an Arcserve "bricks level" backup.
