Documentation anyone ?

Hello

I just bought a second hand office connect 531s, but the guy who shipped it didn't tell me he lost the manual and power supply. ( i'm crossing fingers that it works :s )

For the power supply i guess i can buy a generic one, but for the documentation....
My main question is:
What is the IP adress for the lan administration. ( i'm planning to use it via rj45 ) and what are the passwords ?
And is there a way to reset it to default ?

How do you get to the terminal that they show in the documentation. I have no clue what tools i'm supposed to use it seems from another time to me

I have a serial cable coneected from the router to the PC and then i don't know what to do

You need a null modem serial cable to connect from your PC to the serial port on the back of the router (9-pin male connector next to the power socket). Then use Hyperterminal that is either installed with windows or is available to download free from Hillgraeve (or another Terminal application).

Set the terminal to speed=9600, 8 databits, 1 stopbit and no parity. That should get you to the initial terminal screen. Once you have set up an IP address on the box you can just telnet to it from the LAN.

Do you know if it's possible to use a regular dialup and use this as a router ? ( i don't have the isdn line installed yet, and i'd like to learn how to set it up before moving )

I entered the isp phone number, i don't know where to put the password nor login now. I can't even find a "connect" button.

It is a dial-on-demand router, i.e. it will call when it must route a packet. You should connect the Ethernet port to a hub or switch and then connect your PC to the hub/switch via Ethernet. You configure the router to dial your ISP when it needs to route a packet to the Internet. Be careful though as unless you are on a freefone number it is likely to be up and down like a brides nighty.

I seem to remember there was a quick setup option on the 5x1 series routers that set most things up for an ISP scenario. This may have been software version specific though, what version software is on it? I would highly recommend that you update it to 6.03, you can download this free from 3Com's website.

If you have an old junky computer hanging around you can download smoothwall from smoothwall.org and turn it into a firewall/router. It's based on linux and very simple to setup. Works with dial-up fine too.
