Document version numbers

Is there any way of customizing the version numbering system used by sharepoint for documents. More specificaly, is it possible to force the version number of a document with out having to repeatedly check it in and out until the dersired version number is reached.

"Desired version number" ?

When you publish it becomes a 1.0 or 2.0 or 3.0 etc
