Good Day,

I am new to SharePoint and attempting to overcome an issue. Our document standards specify that the filename also have the version name in it, for example: ‘myDesign V0.1’ So, each time we update the document we also change the filename. Is there a way to change the SharePoint Name property of the document to not use the filename?

So the document name would be myDesign and the filename could change each time I created a new version?

Thanks.

No. The file name is a static value for the life of the file. First you will need to enable versioning on documents in the document library settings. ( Modify settings and columns > Change general settings > Create a version each time you edit a file in this document library? = Yes ).

1. Then you can rely on the default versioning of the SharePoint Product

2. Depending on the nature of the document contents changes need to be approved by multiple users, which is different than systematic versions. In this case you need revisions. To add revisions you will want to add a an additional meta-data or property column that holds the revision information. This column is controled and edited by the user group and not the system.

Both of these implementations require that you rename all of your documents before import to more generic names. Depending on your solution you may need to manually set the revision property for the documents. Depending on the number of documents that you have, the import can be done manually, write your own api code, or search for tools that perform similar tasks.

Thanks for the reply and taking your time to help me.
