Is it better to have Document Redirection or Roaming profiles? We backup from the server only and I am having problems getting users to only store data in their my documents folders as they put it all over their desktops. Will setting every user to a roaming profile help, can they be used together or will that be a conflicting policy?

Help to work out a proven strategy will be appreciated.

You can use both together and yes there are benefits to each.

Roaming profiles will allow your users to be able to use multiple machines and have the same look and feel wherever they go. Their icons will remain where they were etc. Expect longer logon times for larger profiles. Also be prepared for lots of disk space to be eaten up for roaming profiles.

Document redirection is effective (and you can redirect desktop too) in forcing data to be stored on the server. If you are looking for a way to get your users to WNAT to use the server though, just give them a lesson on how to restore previous versions of files using Shadow Copy. If that in itself does not excite them I don't know what will (provided they actually care about their data).

I hope you find this post helpful.

Pardon me for butting in here.

Mark we use roaming profiles and would like to redirect the app data folder to the server so it doesn't copy over every time, the roaming profile is at present in a folder called Profiles in the users work folder. Is it possible to configure this now? I can't seem to see an option to preventing it copying over from it's current location only options to redirect it to another share.

Thanks.

PinkPanther,

You would need to redirect to a new share.

I hope you find this post helpful.
