Document Numbering

I want to generate serial numbers (document numbers) within Word that are derived from SharePoint. Can I use the hyperlink base in Word's document properties or is there some other way?

The end result must be a serially generated document number in a template field called DocNumber. It's part of a document control feature in a standarization project.

Anyone have an idea where to begin?
