Hello,

I have a user who works on a word doc and goes to "send to recipient(as attachment)". This works fine however outlook will open and the document will be there but the .doc extension is not there.

So when forwarded the recipient has an attachment with no extension then I get the call.

Has anyone come across this before? Any ideas?
We are using outlook and word 2000.

Thanks
Matt

In Windows Explorer Tools|Folder Options|View you can select an option to hide extensions of well-known file types. Perhaps the same exists in Outlook options?

You sure it's not an Operator Error?

I'd imagine it's possible to attach files to email, and lop off the file extension.

genomon is on the right track. I believe that if the user has the options to "hide extensions for known file types" selected in Windows Explorer _>Tools|Folder Options|View then if that user uses "send to recipient (as attachment)" the extension will not show.

To test this have the user deselect the option to "hide extensions for known file types".

Hope this helps.

The user does not have access to hiding the extension via GPO.

To clarify, even if the Extension was hidden, the attatchment should still have the icon for a word document. It is like it is renaming the file name and dropping the extension.

Any more thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks
Matt

Not on any of the PCs in our shop.

The doc does not open when received. You are promptred to pick an app to open it with.

The problem is that I can see there is no file association before it is even sent.

OK, problem resolved. I am a certified bone head.

The user started to use periods "." in the document names. Outlook was looking for the file extension after the period.

Thanks for the advice everyone....
Man I wasted too much time on that one....
Back to work now

Calling her an operator is a promotion.

I remember one of my instructors told me that Users=Losers!

I jumped a few steps there!

Whoa there. While I (after 30 years of trying to educate users) can agree with a certain level of that, the primary source of that attitude are systems/programmers. From many many experiences - again not totally disagreeing with the sentiment - one could also say:
