Hi All,
I am newbie to SharePopint server and just trying to take a grasp of the thing.
I want to know that, is it possible to store the document libraries on separate server? i.e. Sql server on one maching and the content on the other.
If yes can you people give me some tips about how to acheive this?

Thanks

Hello,

Sharepoint saves all its content in SQL databases, so the document libaries and documents are not "physically" stored anywhere (except in some tables in the SQL databases).

Regards,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,
Thanks for the reply.
If that is so, what happens to the files which are uploaded from the client machine to the server(ie. shared documents)?

They are placed in the SharePoint SQL database.
However what can be done to browse the Documents Libraries is to use webfolders and add a network place to the Document library (ie. and you will now see the files and folders as "physical" but they are still stored inside a SQL table in the sharepoint content database.

I am slowly understadning the things.
I will get back to you with some more doubts :)
Thanks a bunch for the help.

Hi again,

I just checked the docs table and found the entry of the document i had uploaded, under 'LeafName' column and 'Dirname' something like 'sites/ABC/shared documents'.(The dirname must be logical).
I found some hexadecimal string in column 'content' against the record.
I am just curious how actually the content is stored in the table and can we see the actual content in SQL server issuing sql query?

Thanks

Hi,

well doing any modifications to a SharePoint database is not supported by Microsoft. So playing around with sharepoints databases is a no-no :)

So it is strongly recommended that you do not play around with the databases (atleast not in a production environment)

I know that a query does not mean you are modifying anything but just thought I should mention this here.

Cheers,
Thomas

Thanks again,

Can you just explain me how to use webfolders and add a network place to the Document library?

I can try :)
This is how I usually do it (or instruct our users to do it)

Choose to map a network drive.
Choose sign up for online storage or connect to a network server.
Click next, choose another network location
In the internet or network address window type in the address to your site with the document library.
i.e documents
Click next, you can chose to assign a name to your shortcut, click next, click finnish.

Now you can browse your shared documents library in for example windows explorer.

NOTE!: The folder namned Forms is not to be deleted!!, it holds information regarding your document library (all document libraries has a Forms folder), if you remove that folder your document library will be corrupt.

Cheers,
Thomas

Hi,
Works fine.
However is not possible to store the documets 'physically' on the server instead of stroing it in DB?we are thinking of it from storage perspective, so that disk space required for the entire portal will get distributed.
I guess using customize web parts it may be possible to store the documents physically but i am not sure what will be the impact of this on other features of SPS.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi,

As far as I know there is no possible way to upload/store documents in SharePoint and not have it stored in a SharePoint database, this is by design, everything goes into the databases.

How does your setup look like? What kind of disk configuration are you running on your servers?
