I have put 3 shortcut icons on the desktop of a win2000 pro machine. I am running Office 97. When I click on the desktop icon I always get the error that "the document with the name xxx is already open. You can not open two documents with the same name."

If I click ok in the error box I am able to continue and everything is ok. Never had this problem with win 98.

Delete all the shortcuts. Search for the Executable file, such as winword.exe. Right-click it, hit Create Shortcut and it should tell you it can't create one here--do you want to create it on the desktop, you'll say YES. See if that helps. Perhaps you made a shortcut to a shortcut or something?

Thanks but that was not it. What you suggests only creates a shortcut for the executeable. I want the shortcut to be for the file and the exe.

You don't have to have a shortcut to the executable. Windows file-associates your files so you can double-click them and it automatically opens the program for you. If you're talking about an Access MDB with a login or something, that's different.

Created a shortcut from explorer without opening Excel as suggested. Your right the association should open the program. Well it opened Excel ok but still the same error.

In case anyone reads this old post...here is the fix...

START|RUN| excel \regserver

Fixes it!!

w7zr: Just want to let you know that a regserver fixes lots of problems, but it's sometimes a little drastic, particularly if someone has a lot of custom settings, etc. We don't offer that first for just that reason. But it's great that you post it so others can find it! Thanks. A star for you. Brainbench MVP for Microsoft Word

I got the same problem on WIN2K machine
every file I open comes up and says the file is already open

Do what w7zr did to fix his:

START|RUN| excel \regserver

That's for Excel. Use the following for Word:

START|RUN| winword \regserver techsupportgirl@home.com
