After solving the problem in the previous thread, I have a question.
IF the doctype declaration was the problem -- what's the point of including the doctype at all. Don't most browsers display okay w/out the declaration?
You should get in the habit of using a doctype. It's just something you have to do to stay relevant; ignore this stuff now and prepare to struggle later.
Thanks for those links. I too struggled with the doctypes, because the book I learnt html from sort of glossed over them. I have made a couple of web sites valid by w3c standards and that was an adventure.
A quick follow up to all the above responses. I have been experimenting with different doctypes to make some 'sliced and diced' tables render correctly in MAC's and PC NN 6.2. The only doctype and URL that is working in all browsers and versions is the following:
