I have this doctype that I have put into my webpages - I was told that it is the correct one for my webpages, and it will probably help in my search engine placement efforts.

Is this the correct code?

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "
Thanks!

Looks valid to me.

It will ensure that any CSS works correctly though

Sometimes, when my code just won't behave, I take it outside and make it listen to britney spears music, and when it comes back it's really well behaved. I wonder if it's suffering from post tramatic stress syndrome now..

Not necessarily, no.

It will ensure that the browser knows what specifications and DTD you are coding to, and will make some difference to the layout (i.e. take the DTD away and some layout will most likely change)... But it will not ensure that the browser renders your CSS "correctly" (i.e. to the letter of the specs) - as most browsers still have some rendering bugs.
