hi everyone,

I'm setting up a new 2005 db server. I usually install all the client tools onto the database server but I'm rethinking that.

Do you install Management Studio on the SQL Server server or do you require developers to use tools on their desktop? What is the best practice?

Thanks, John

Best practice I would expect would be to do development from another system. However, there's plenty of administrative tasks inside that management studio that I wouldn't want to be without on my machine.

Here I've not got a spare workstation I can have vendors/contractors VPN/RDP into to work from. They just go straight to the server. Best practices are not required, just ideals that you want to carefully think through non-compliance with.

When I'm building servers I generally do not install the client tools on the machines. If they aren't there I won't be tempted to run them locally and waste CPU and memory loading up SSMS.

My developers don't have access to the development servers console much less the production servers console.
