Yes they do, but as Wullie said it depends on the engine.
Google is one of the most popular engines and they accept free sites!!
They spider the net monthly AFAIK and will pick up your site then, so there's no need to submit it to them.
Other engines are different of course!
They spider the net monthly AFAIK and will pick up your site then, so there's no need to submit it to them.
That isn't the case, do not rely on this happening.. Google spiders sites that it knows about or finds on the way, they in no way have every single site on the net.. That is not possible..
Always submit to the engines, never rely on them finding you..
I was browsing through Google to check this a few weeks ago and that's where I got that info. I based it on this but perhaps I misunderstood. I was referring only to google, so I agree that you should submit to other engines.
"Google is a fully automated search engine, which employs robots known as 'spiders' to crawl the web on a monthly basis and find sites for inclusion in the Google index. Since this process does not involve human editors, it is NOT necessary to submit your site to Google in order to be included in our index. In fact, the vast majority of sites listed are not manually submitted for inclusion."
It's also possible that the google spider will find the site before the submitted URL gets indexed, due to the massive amount of sites being submitted daily.
"The best way to ensure a high listing on Google is for your page to be linked from lots of pages on other sites."
What do you think Wullie, is this the best way in your experince or do think its more worth while to submit to as many engines as possible?
Thats exactly what I meant about finding the site. If you page is linked to and the engine spiders that page, thenn it will likley spider yours as well.
If you have a site all on its lonesome, then it will not find it. It can't possibly search every IP address on the net looking for sites.
I don't believe it at all. First of all I submitted 2 sites and they didn't show up for 2 months after I submitted. Can you explain that to me. Google does not have every site on the net. Everyone would use it and only it. I think they try to get as many sites as possible, but google would never be able to index every site on the net. Leaving your site to be found by google is like me sitting on my doorstop waiting for someone to hand me a cheque for a million dollars. You have to go out and buy the lottery ticket, or in this case submit.
Sorry that was the worst analogy ever, I apologize for that one, but you get my drift.
And it's not you I'm criticing, it's google. NO WAY!!!
I see what you mean, a site on its own is useless, I assumed most people will also look for other solutions such as getting their sites listed elsewhere!
Spyderix, I put a site online about 6 weeks ago. Google found it I presume through links from other sites, its in the top spot for Finland GAA (key words) which is the name of the site. I submitted it about 2 weeks ago but i reckon google had found it by then anyway. Also top on Yahoo with the same keywords.
Funny things, these engines.
Google will search TT every now and again, picking up links as it goes, then it adds all of those sites to it's index to be spidered.
A lot of people are under the impression that the engine just clicks the links and follows that directly, this is not the way it works. The links found might not be indexed for days or even weeks afterwards.
The morale of the story?? Submit, Submit, Submit....
Yeah, thats what I mentioned in my last post, more than likely thats how they found it. I am also listed on a few other sites for the last month or so.
Thx for the info, i'm still trying to figure how this all works. Is it worth spending time on Meta tags?? I have a tags wizard which scans the net for your keywords and recommends what words may be better to use. AFAIK google doesn't bothwer with Mets tags, right/wrong??
Google doesn't use the keyword meta but it does use others, the most important is the description. If you don't use a desctription, then you have absolutley no control over what appears for your site. It could be any part of the site and it may make no sense at all. Just remember that this is a robot, they don't think, they only do what they have been programmed to do.
About the tag wizard, this is a delicate subject.. LOL
Those programs look for the words that HAVE been searched, they cannot tell what will be searched. Personally, I don't bother with them, just think what you would search for to find that site and also ask others.
And finally, remember that Google is not the only engine out there, you will also get traffic from other engines, so do your best to please them too.
Another thing to do is to check your logs every now and again to see what people are using to find you. Then go to those engines and see where you return for that particular phrase or word. If you don't rank within the top 5, then work on the site to optimise it better for those keywords.
You just might be amazed at some of the phrases people use to find sites. One that particualarly stands out to me was:
Where can I find the phone number from a commercial on TV?
For some strange reason, my web design site is returned high for that and many other very weird phrases.. LOL
I had something like that, "where can I find the worst website on the net?" for some reason my site was top, must have been a mistake! ))
My logs seemingly get cleared every day, I check them once in a while but they only show access for a 24hr period! Wonder why this is? I didn't bother checking this out cos most of the sites I am working on (5) are still on my hard drive!
Thanks again for all the info, i'll be looking into those more closely now!!
