Hi all,

I have a weird situation with my W2K server. Being the only DC in the company, I was able to select to login locally or through network. This morning, when I hit Clt-Alt-Del, I do not see my server name when I click the scolldown button. I only get to see my domain name.

Does anyone has solution on this?

Thanks

Maybe im being stupid but i didnt think you could log on locally to a DC

I don't know when this changed but you could logon as the local admin on Win2k servers in the past but i can't logon locally to any of my SP4 2k servers. This behaviour is standard on 2k3 servers.

Once a server is converted to a Domain Controller, you will no longer see the name of the server since it is no longer an isolated host -- this is by design since NT4. You can only see the server name or domain name on member services.

itsp is correct

Also note that there are no local accounts on DCs. Check it out by going to mmc -> manage server. You'll see an "X" for local administration.

This can be an issue when you demote a CD: the password you enter at the end of the procedure is the local admin password.

Cheers

The local account does exist, sort of. When you converted your server to a domain controller, you had to specify a password for the local administrator account. Should your DC give you any problems, you can start the computer in recovery mode (not functioning as a DC at this point) and you log in with the local administrator account with the password specified. This is the only place you will get to use this account so it's really more of an emergency account than anything else.

If you let the DC run up to windows and the login screen, you will only be able to log in with a domain account. Member servers will still support local accounts.

Start, Help. You'll be surprised what's there. A+/MCP/MCSE/MCDBA
