here's a good one:

RedHat 7.3 txt only server.
I did a LAN scan on it, and there are 4 TCP ports open, but there is like 11 UDP ports open. I can configure where things go (port, protocall, and machine) on the way into my network with the router.

The things running on the box are http, ssh, ftp...the usual stuff, but not telnet (hehehe).

Ok, so do I need the UDP? And what exactly does it do? Hope I was of some help...

Thanks for the help...

UDP is another network transmission protocol, like TCP. The difference between UCP and TCP is that UDP does not guaranty delivery of the packet -- it just sends it out into the great beyond.

Some of the internet's standard protocols use UDP -- DNS being the most prominent. Standard DNS queries travel by UDP, zone transfers by TCP. ______________________________________________________________________
