Do I really need S.A.T.?

I have just walked into a new job that has a NEC Electra Elite 192 for their phone system. They have no documentation for it all. I have worked on a ROLM and AT&T switches in the past. Is there a way to telnet into the NEC box or do I have to buy the software to maintain my switch?

And why is it so hard to find documentation from NEC?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
