Im pretty sure my floppy drive is broken - Can anyone tell me if I need to use a floppy disc to format my hard drive?(40 g), is it possible to make a start up disc on CD instead?if so then how do I go about doing this please.I use windows ME.

1. floppy drives are very cheap (c. £9 here in UK)
2. current state of PCs/Windows, I'd still ahte to be without one.
3. Yes - you can make a 'boot floppy' CD (I thibk I described how to some months ago in another thread - can't remember off top of my head) - BUT why not just buy new floppy drive.

PS. If your 40GB drive is a second drive, you can set it up from within ME. Run fdisk from a dos box in ME - change to second disk (option 5). Create partition(s). Exit and reboot - and new partitions will be available to format (eg, dos, format x:, where X: is new partition).

Thanks for your prompt reply. I will buy a new floppy drive, but as Ive got everything backed up and ready to rock, and my pc is really unstable at the mo (only running smoothly in 1/2 hour bursts) I would like to format my hard drive straight away. I shall try to find the thread that you mentioned in your reply. Thanks again!

No you don't Need one, but you can bet as some point somebody will give you a disk with information on it.

Or someday your hard drive will crash and you will need access to it to recover something important. And your EBD won't fit in your CD.

Apparently Dell are considering doing away with Floppies in their new machines.

No idea if this is true or not.

My Floppy Drive has also broke... I was wondering where I could possible get one for a CHEAP price.
Thanks

Finalfantasy,
Best Buy or a PC Shop. If you want a cheaper one, well, sounds like misspink may have one.
