Do I need a hub with an ADSL Modem Router?

I'm setting up a network to share a broadband connection between four machines. I'm going to buy the U.S. Robotics Sureconnect ADSL Modem Router to share the broadband connection.

Do I also need a hub then if the computers want to share data? Or does the router part do that for you?

If the Router has an in-built switch then you won't need one, otherwise you will.

It depends on the number of rj45 ports on the router and the number of PC`s you want to link. If you have enough free ports on the router all you have to do is link all the PC`s to the router and that will take care of the network. If you need extra ports you will have to use a hub connected to the router via a x-over rj45 lead or use a standart patch lead if the hub has an uplink port.

yes you will need a hub - the router you mentioned only has 1 RJ45 port.

One other note. It is fairly easy to overwhelm the store-and-forward routing tables of a device such as you chose. all you need is one person running a p-2-p application, and the device will likely lockup as you exhause its available RAM.

Consider then your uses by all users of the device. Generally you can count the number of LAN rj-45 ports available on the device as a guess as to the included RAM in the box for forwarding and connection entries. More ports usually means more RAM included in the router. More RAM generally makes it less likely that it will run out of table space to hold routing information, and temporary storage space for the packets to be forwarded.

There are many, many people who find themselves quickly exhausting the available table space in a one-port router.
