If someone runs a mix of antispyware software, e.g. Adaware, Spyware Blaster, Spybot and MS Antispyware, could there be interactions between these programs which cause them to be less effective than if they were used singly?

I am thinking on the premise that antivirus software MUST only be used singly.

IMHO it's possible to get false detections when running a mixture, however I run a mixture of SpywareBlaster, AdAware SE Personal, Bazooka, HijackThis and Spybot on both my laptop and desktop. I've been running this or similar combinations for about 2 years without incident or infection.

not strictly true, see here for an example of an AV product that uses 2 AV engines simultaneously.

I second Tazuk's thoughts.

I know that version 10.0 of Symantec is recommending all other real time scanners be disabled. However, one product isn't sufficient protection so I've kept my basic security structure intact.

MS Spyware
Spyware Blaster

My advice, is to test performance hits and problems that you may encounter prior to rolling out several programs in conjunction.
