what (simple) thing am i missing?

when I open a web-browser on my Win2K-Pro workstation (that i havent used for months), it fails with the dnserr: 'check your connection settings'. Yet I can open shared files from drives mapped to my Win2K Server just fine.

from the bad workstation i can open a cmd window and telnet to a unix machine via IP and it works, but telnet via hostname fails.

if i manually change TCP/IP-dns on the good workstation to a hard-coded DNS it works fine, but changing this bad one still has dnserr.

I haven't powered on this Win2K Pro workstation for several months, and I can't think of anything that was done to it before its shutdown (the user was let go).

i'm missing something simple, eh?

thanks in advance,
WillieZ

type "ipconfig /all" on the working pc and on the non-working pc. Compare the results yourself or post them here.

Aside from the expected differences in IP / ethernet / and dhcp lease times, they were exactly the same, except... the host name for the bad was capitalized and the hostname for the good (below) was lowercase.

anything lese to check?

when you do an "nslookup servername" of your DNS server, what results do you get on the machine that's not working?

do a ipconfig /registerdns and check eventviewer for errors

when ur in a domain environment, take the bad pc out of domain in a workgroup, reboot, and put it back in the domain

chipk: the results from the bad machine exactly match the output on a good machine:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>nslookup ttc001a
*** Can't find server name for address 10.0.0.2: Non-existent domain
*** Default servers are not available
Server: UnKnown
Address: 10.0.0.2

Name: ttc001a.TTCNY.com
Address: 10.0.0.2

Lemon13: there is nothing in the eventlist from the ipconfig /registerdns.

FYI:
I did realize i have a DNSCACHE eventlist error. This is a day old, and has only come up on this machine maybe once a month or less going back a year:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: dnscache
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11050
Date: 10/14/2008
Time: 1:36:27 PM
User: N/A
Computer: WS01
Description:
The DNS Client service could not contact any DNS servers for a repeated
number of attempts. For the next 30 seconds the DNS Client service will
not use the network to avoid further network performance problems. It
will resume its normal behavior after that. If this problem persists,
verify your TCP/IP configuration, specifically check that you have a
preferred (and possibly an alternate) DNS server configured. If the
problem continues, verify network conditions to these DNS servers or
contact your network administrator.

Thanks again.

try ipconfig /flushdns

Is the problem sysetm on the latest service pack?

You might try completely removing the DNS configuration in TCP/IP Properties, Apply the changes, reboot, and then put the server back in again.

Lemon13:
i removed from, then added back to the domain (after reboot) and still my browser times out with: Cannot find server or DNS Error'

Thx.

chipk:
the TCP/IP settings are to auto-obtain an IP and DNS. I had changed DNS from auto to the hard-coded IP my server uses, but no luck.
when you say to remove the tcp/ip config, you mean for me to uninstall the protocol?

what sp is the w2k pc?
can u ping dns-server from bad pc by ip?
on ur dns-server, is there a host(a) entry for the bad pc (and a ptr in the reverse lookup)?
in cmd, do a "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt", that will rebuild ur stack, check resultlog.txt for errors

chipk:
1. running 'ipconfig /flushdns' did nothing for me.
2. my server is up to Service Pack 4.

The only thing different between BAD machine and GOOD machine are: 1- BAD was powered off for 2+ months. 2- the IP the dhcp server gave it is in the 70's where as previously the range of ip's used were never above the 50's. 3- the latest Win updates are installed on GOOD (and the Win2K server as well) and not installed on BAD.

Could there have been an update that made them compatible with each other, but incompatible with machines not updated?

Thanks again.

I doubt it is lacking a couple updates that is causing the problem. So long as you have SP4, that's probably the most important thing here. I would do those other updates anyway, though.

Being powered off for two months, I would expect it to get a different IP, because your lease duration looks to be 7 or 8 days.

HOw about more info about the physical connectivity of this problem PC. Is it connected to a different hub/switch than the working PC? Could you easily change that? What about spare NICs? Could you easily remove the one that's in the problem machine and put in a spare?

Lemon13:
1: bad pc's sp level is 4
2: yes i can ping the dns-server by ip
3: yes i do find an A entry for the bad pc in the forward lookup zones, but i dont see anything definitive in the reverse lookup zones. What should i be looking for?
4: got an error from netsh-
The following command was not found: int ip reset resetlog.txt

Thx.

chipk:
this all started when the first thing i tried to do was get virus updates and win-updates when the browser timed out.

its a simple/simple layout, GOOD and BAD and SERVER are in the same switch, and since I can readily map drives to the server, then connectivity shouldnt be an issue. i can telnet and log into my unix-server just fine. to answer you, i dont have another switch, but i do have another (older) NIC.

FYI: i just uninstalled SAP on the BAD pc and rebooted, but with no change in ability (GOOD didnt have it so i figured to minimize the non-parallel's).

(gettin harder to nail down, eh?)
Thx.

Whoops, I meant that netsh ip context didn't exist in Windows 2000, at least I don't think it did.

Actually, I don't see that context anywhere...perhaps you meant:

netsh interface ipv4 reset?

Lemon13:
when i use 'netsh interface reset all' (from netsh /?) i dont see any output... what am i supposed to see?
