I cant get my 2.8 server to use files then dns.

Here is what Ive done

nsswitch.conf has
hosts: files [notfound=continue unavail=continue tryagain=continue] dns
*** I also tried hosts: files dns
I have a domain set in resolv.conf as well as two nameservers.
I do a kill -HUP on the inetd process
It still goes right to dns and will not find things in the host file.

another thing confusing me is when I take dns out of the nsswitch.conf file
hosts: files
bounce the inetd daemon
it still looks to dns $#&*&%^$&$!!!!!

Thanks in advance
Dennis

If your 2.8 box is using DHCP, then that may be the problem. It will get its network preferences from the DHCP server.

Thanks for your response,
However Im not using DHCP.

Have you checked /etc/netconfig? There must be a - in the nametoaddr_libs column for "inet" transports before the system will use the hosts listing in nsswitch.conf. Also, I have found instances where bouncing inetd did not work. I had to reboot.
