DNS ??

I use Solaris but it should be similar to Slackware. Check your /etc/resolv.conf it should something like this:
search domainname.com
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Also check your /etc/nsswitch.conf look for the hosts: line. It should resemble this:
hosts: files dns [NOTFOUND=return]
If dns is after files then add it.
