Hi there

We have just bough another company and in the process of merging IT systems. Site 1 is running AD and site 2 NT4 - yes I know I was horrified too! :O)

All IP is open between sites and DNS zone files are replicated between sites and domains.

However a number of users of AD will now be permenantly based at site 2 (NT4) and wil utilise the current DHCP scope in place at that site. This will of course set their DNS servers to be local NT4 servers with just a copy of the AD Zone file.

Will this cause problems over time with the AD environment?

Other option we have is building another local 2k DNS server on the NT4 site, but we will then have to consider a seperate VLAN running another DHCP scope.

Biggest question is what affect will using a non 2k AD integrated DNS server have on the 2000 and XP clients?

Any thoughts?

XP and 2000 are both systems brought on board after W98, which is a good thing for you. With the systems you are using, you've lost the need for things like wins and lmhosts. The bad news is MS has retired NT, so tech support will totally disappear come Jan, 2007. Why not upgrade the NT box now, make all dc's and save yourself a headache down the road? Good luck.
