I have a single server with a single domain. Under Forward Lookup Zone for some reason I have the following;

Server Name
-Forward Lookup Zone
--_msdcs.domain.local
---dc
---domains
---gc
---pdc
--domain.local
---_msdcs.domain.local (which is greyed out, similar to when you delegate it
---_sites
---_tcp
---_udp
---DomainDNSZones
---ForestDNSZones

Typically the _msdcs.domain.local falls under the domain.local zone. What occured here and how do I fix it.

The reason I question this is that my a few of my workstations (3 of them) are telling me the following within their event viewer;

Event ID:5719

"No Domain Controller is available for domain DOMAIN due to the following:

There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request."

Thanks

Make sure the IP's and subnets are right for those workstations.

This zone can reside at the root level of your forward lookup zones or can reside within each zone, when first installed it is at the root and then delegated out within the zones as this is how MS recommends making the msdcs zone available. However, if you do have it residing within your domain.local zone file this is not a negative and I am pretty sure this is what happens if you run a netdiag /fix on a machine that has its zones crapped out. I would check your netdiag results, and verify dns settings on your clients.
