DNS Zone change question 2

Hello,

We have a DC (Alpha) that hosts a couple of DNS primary forward zones, and we would like to decommission it. We also have a few other DCs that host these zones as secondaries. So, my question is, can I just "Change" the zone type of these forward zones on one of the other DCs to "Primary" and bring down Alpha? Or do I need to recreate the forward zones as primaries on one of the other DCs? Do I need to stop the DNS service on these DCs when I do this? Any help would be appreciated! =)

Thank you,

Jay

you can just change the zone type on the other DNS server. don't forget to update all secondaries with the new primary server IP address andd allow replication/notification to all secondaries on the new primary . also if that is an "external" zone don't forget to update your zone info at registrar.

We have done this all the time (reverse the concept of primary and secondary). Just remember that the the secondary file is pretty terse, so if you have comments and formatting/sorting in the primary file, that will all be lost. On the other hand, the secondary file is also more easily machine readable for a autoformat program.
