A friend of mine owns a domain name that was registered through godaddy. While he owns the domain, he hasn't maintained a service on it recently. Out of curiosity to see if he ever created his site, I went to the domain and recieved a page written in Cyrillic, which obviously was not his. I told him about it and he confirmed that someone apparently hijacked the domain and sent it to their site in Russia.
He logged into his godaddy account and entered a re-direct for his domain to google. It took about 24 hours, but when you go to the domain you now get google instead.
My question is, how is it possible to hijack a domain like that and how does one prevent it? I would think that there would be safeguards inplace or everyone would be trying to grab and redirect high profile names.
