I am new to DNS. I want to create a DNS server, and I don't know where to begin. I am running Linux kernel 2.2.14-5.0 and I need to know what to setup, online resources, or just what programs/binaries run and configure DNS services.
Any help on this issue would make my day.

"Bind" is pretty much the standard for DNS services and should come with your distribution and may already be running. You really should get the book on Bind from O'Reilly and read it if you intend to run/administer DNS services.

Installing Bind is pretty straightforward and the config IMO is pretty simple (at least compared to Sendmail). You have to configure Bind in the /etc/named.boot or /etc/named.conf file. Which one you need depends on what version of Bind you're running. The earlier versions used named.boot and the later versions use named.conf. I believe RH6 installs both config files to further complicate the issue.

Once you have your main config file ready, you'll need a config file for each zone (domain name) for which your dns server will be "authoritative". These are fairly easy to do but you just have to read the instructions and watch your syntax CAREFULLY. Knowing when to end a domain name with a period is probably the hardest thing to learn about the zone files.

If you're using an earlier version of Bind, I can give you a few starter files to get you going. There is no substitute though for reading the Bind book from O'Reilly.

Thanks for that. I thought bind was the software for DNS. Now I am going to pick up a copy of DNS and Bind, Oreilly.
Thanks for the info GunJack.

Got any other tips in terms of running and ISP?
I don't think I will prvide all of that, but it's always good to know.

At the moment I just want to run major services (http,smtp,pop3,DNS,etc)

Hehe, well I've been running one myself for a number of years. If you want to give me a call, I'd be happy to give you some advice and help point you in the right direction. There's more to it than I could put in a message though :)

Good luck,
GJ
