I am setting up DNS on my local network. Currently I am using MS wins (yuck) My question is this : Since my internet domain is hosted by my ISP and I will host my local DNS, does it make since to use the same domain name in both DNS setups ie.. My internal DNS server will not be an Authority for the internet domain

sampledomain.com

My internal DNS will only be used for internal name resoloution and will not be an Authority for my internet domain.

I could see how it may cause a problem if they are the same? But maybe not ?

I could use some input

-Danny

You can setup your internal DNS server like a secondary/slave caching DNS server... I guess that's the way to do.

Excelent suggestion.

A secondary or backup DNS is the correct way but make sure that your internal DNS server has "the ISP's DNS" as his primary DNS server in the TCP configurations.

I do not want to be an authority of our internet domain. Being a secondary name server would sort of imply that. Please correct me if I am wrong.

However the concept of being a caching only server may have possibilites.

a caching only server is a good option

Friends,
The truth is, I am not sure that Unix can run in caching mode only. I have seen this option in Microsoft DNS before.

Can someone please verify if it also comes in Unix?

Unix can do anything you want to do with DNS! How do you think the GLOBAL INTERNET is set up? Another question is if your Unix OS/version can do that!

What is your hardware/os platform?

SCO opneserver 5.05

But I think the capabilites have more to do with the version of Bind you use

caching only configuration is possible.

Thank you for the info.

But I must mention that I almost Flaged the message from ElgisRamon...

A bit rough eh!
L8ter!
