My friend set up the DNS from his server so he hosts me. How can I host myself for external clients?

I have a different question conserning DNS on the Windows2000 Advanced Server.
Does anybody have a simpe step by step guide? I have been using a third party DNS server (without problems) and would really appreciate not using it but I can't seem to get DNS on the Advanced Server set up right.
Am I possibly making my error by setting up IIS first? I have read all the info on Microsoft that I can find and have a couple of reference books, there has to be some little something I am missing.
