I would like to have DNS where xxxxx.alvazan.com returns the same ip of alvazan.com where xxxxx is of infinite combination. Is there a DNS service that I can use to do this?

If there are no services that support this like godaddy or someone, does any particular DNS server support this like bind?

In addition it would be nice to route all xxxxx.alvazan.com to one ip except for a few specific machines I have like dean.alvazan.com and myweb.alvazan.com....that would just be a nice addition.

Any ideas?

thanks,
Dean

Most commercial registrars who offer dns hosting with their domain offers this. In most cases it's offered as an a record marked as @ this would be all sub domain names that are not specifically named in other name, or cname records.

I just checked GoDaddy and they do offer this in their total DNS control.

I haven't done it in a while, but wildcards on bind
work on A records. So you would specify the records for dean and myweb.

dean in A 1.2.3.4
myweb in a 2.3.4.5
* in A 6.7.8.9 ;for the rest.

This also works for CNAMES.

a 6.7.8.9
* IN CNAME
BTW, @ means the domain itself, it isn't a wild card. So this is how to get a IP address for the domain without the leading www.

a 6.7.8.9
@ in a 6.7.8.9
