DNS server setup PLEASE HELP :(

I just installed Mandrake 8.1 . I am familiar with linux to an extent. I am interested in setting up dns servers, I installed the server packages when I was installing Mandrake but I dont know where to go from here. Does the dns automatically run and I just have to configure it? And if so what do I type in the terminal to configure Bind. Please help , I need step by step instructions. I would really appreciate it. THanks

I'm not sure if Mandrake provides any gui tools for this. In essence, the bind server is called 'named' (name daemon) and it starts under the sysv init scripts and can be turned on (or off) at various runlevels with chkconfig :





# /sbin/chkconfig --list named





# /sbin/chkconfig --level 345 named on





etc.





The main config file is /etc/named.conf and you can edit this by hand if you know what you are doing. That normally points to one or more zone files (for each domain) such as /var/named/whatever.com.zone . Again, you can edit these by hand as long as you remember to increment the serial number after each change.





One problem you may have is setting up rndc if your bind is packaged to use that. Rndc is a utility to control the bind server itself that operates on port 953 (vs 53 for bind) and requires that you set up crytographic keys in /etc/rndc.conf and amend your /etc/named.conf to contain the same key.

See I want to setup ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com .. after I create the dns servers is there anything special I have to do . Can you give me more step by step instrucitons to setup the dns servers. Just assume I am completely stupid on the setup for the dns. Thanks so much I really appreciate it.
