Hi all,

I'm a newbie when it comes to configuring DNs and I've come across a problem...

I have two win2k servers, one is the PDC for the root domain (A) and the other is the PDC for a subdomain (B). I have DNS server running on server A but I get constant events in the log saying that the DNs server is sending packets to itself because of a config error. I used to get a message saying that dynamic registration or re-registration could not take place because the DNs server canot be found. Everything is pinging around the LAN OK, and it is resolving IP addresses to device names OK.

Hope someone can help, apart from clogging up the event logs, will it do any harm until I get it sorted out ??

your help will be mucho appreiated !!

thanks
Roddy

maybe check the FAQ in here and make sure you are configured correctly.

where are FAQ, can't find 'em ? :(

I know, took me a while to first find them in this site.
Towards the top of the page, below the search field.... See those tabs there?

Win2k Server had it's own DNS Client in the Services .. this caches DNS whether you have a server or not that does all the resolving.

You may wish to try disabling this service. I have on all my Win2k servers. Alshrim
System Administrator
MCSE, MCP+Internet

Oh yer, found the FAQ now, it's always a TAB that I can't find ... DOH

I'll have a try at that today, interesting tip about stopping the DNS client on the DNS server too, I'll try that too.

thanks for your input !
