I have a Red hat 7.3 system that is a relatively new install. It has a 3com 3c905cx network card and connects through my linksys router into my direct tv dsl. My problem is that this computer takes much longer to do name resolution than the other computers on my network although its actual downloads speeds are no slower. Does anyone have any ideas as to what would slow down it's ability to resolve DNS?

thanks

What happens when you ping a hostname on the internet and one on your local LAN?

ping -c4 ping -c4 some_comp_on_my_lan

Are they both slow to respond?

Are you running BIND on your Linux box to resolve names, or are you using an external DNS server?

Do you have more than one name server in your /etc/resolv.conf. If you do, they are searched in the order in which they are in the file. If your first listed nameserver is offline, then you will have to wait for a time out before the next one is tried.

Mark.
