We have a 2003 server running DNS. The problem is that at random times the resolution for .org domains doesnt work but .com, .edu and so forth works. The server has root hints and does recursion fine and once I restart the DNS server service resolution to .org domains work again. I have manually rebuilt the DNS forward and reverse lookup zones and tried everything else under the sun. The DNS server is non-Active Directory intergraded. Nothing in the event logs regarding error with the resolution of .org domains. If you need any more info let me know. What monitoring can I do to get more information about the problem?

Are you attempting to resolve external .org addresses or internal? If it's external, rebuilding your zones isn't likely going to resolve that.

Are you using forwarders or just the root hints? We had a major isp that had a flaky DNS server that would start timing out every day around 9:30-10am for about a 1/2 hour.

We are attempting to resolve external .org addresses.

We are using root hints, no forwarders.

We are the ISP for seventyfive schools and districts and most of them use our DNS for resolution.

What happens if you use a forwarder?

Do you have a PIX firewall? Check this KB article...

I do have a PIX, but the problem is strictly web browsing.

I will have to try and setup the forwarder this weekend. Do you know of any reliable free public DNS services?

Thanks for all the help!!!!

204.254.120.6
66.216.66.5

are two that have always been reliable for me. I've probably got 50 servers using them.
