do you want to be a caching and forwarding client or just a "normal client"?
normal client config:
thishost# more /etc/resolv.conf
domain thisismydomain.com
nameserver 99.88.77.66
thishost# egrep ^hosts: /etc/nsswitch.conf
hosts: files dns
thishost#

Hi,
I did the same as what you are explaining.
What DNS we have ia a windows based one.
Eveen after resolv.conf, nsswitch.conf, hosts, defaultdomainname & domainname we have to register maunally.
I've asked my Windows Colleague: you have to configure the Windows DNS Server to accept queries from unauthenticated clients....????

btw. /etc/defaultdomain is just for NIS & NIS+ if you are not using this I suggest to delete it; if you are running sendmail configure a Fully Qualified Hostname in /etc/hosts
eg
50.40.30.20 myhost myhost.mydomain.com loghost
