We run a dns server here at work and I would like to redirect users to a different website than what they type in the browser. For example, if they try to go to Microsoft.com, they would be directed to Tek-tips.com (just an example). How could I do this?

Thanks,

Shannan

We do this with a DNS Alias. This works when a user types a address and we send them to a cluster or a different server. Example create an alias called TEST and the set it to go to TEST123 or the IP Address of TEST123. When the user types test into the address they will be redirected to the TEST123 server.

Let me know if you have any questions.

The key is to set up microsoft.com on your DNS server. It will then answer for that domain rather than forwarding queries.

Then, add an A or CNAME record as sjandy suggested:
CNAME .. or..
A 216.45.19.33

Keep in mind that you'll have to manage all addresses under this domain that you want users to hit. If you want to redirect not ftp then it'll be up to you to keep track of ftp's IP address.

And if the user has the right to change the DNS servers he is using, then this has no effect, assuming that DNS traffic to external servers from the clients has not been blocked.
