DNS Query on inbound email?

I am new to postfix so forgive me for basic questions. I have been having a problem with my postfix SMTP server. It is configured to send inbound email to a middleman postoffice (also postfix) on the internal network before going into our mail system. But what I am noticing via a sniffer trace is that 1) it tries to do a ICMP ping of my DNS server about 200 times a minute (which the DNS server ignores) and 2) The server is doing a DNS query of my internal domain name. Shouldn't it know anything with my domain coming inbound goes to the internal machine without doing a DNS query?
