Hello

This is the set-up:

NT Server in private IP range 10.10.10.5/24
WINS Server 10.10.10.5
Mailserver 10.10.10.7
DHCP clients 10.10.10.10/24 to 10.10.10.90/24
Router 10.10.10.2/24
DNS Servers are hosted by ISP and have public addresses.

The problem is local name resolution, I have been tweaking WINS and playing around with LMHOSTS files but I now think the problem is DNS related as when I try to ping a local name, some are resolved to the local privately assigned IP address and some are appended with a .co.uk and resolved to a public internet address - the real problem is that my Exchange server (NetBios name 'MAILSERVER') is resolved to
mailserver.co.uk 62.13.129.2 which is not what I want!!

One question, as we use TCP/IP & NetBios locally and use our ISP DNS servers for Internet lookups - is there any need for DNS on my local server.

I inherited this server and it has DNS running with the its local address 10.10.10.5 and the ISP DNS server addresses listed?

Thanks for any help

EB

How many clients do you have?. As Bcastner said a DNS server would be an excellent idea. However if you only have a small network you may be better off setting up a host file for your network.

Thanks for the tips guys - as it transpired I had a faulty TCP/IP stack and after a reinstall and rebuild of the DHCP and WINS databases everything is ship shape!

We are still running NT so I think that I will stick with WINS for local name resolution until we eventually upgrade to 2000 server and active directory - then I will be checking your FAQ for DNS tips!

Cheers

EB
