I am having trouble with a Windows 98 PC. IP is working fine and I can ping addresses on the Internet. DNS is not working, but I know the DNS servers are good servers and I can ping them. If I try to ping it says it cannot resolve. If I try to ping homepc which is another pc on my network it will resolve to that IP address. If I know the ISP DNS servers are working and I can ping them, why wouldn't they resolve a valid domain name? I know they have had trouble with viruses in the last couple of weeks and I am wondering if an important file might have been deleted? Any suggestions without having to reload Windows???

A tracert isn't going to highlight his problem if he can't resolve DNS ("If I try to ping it says it cannot resolve").

Have you checked your DNS settings in your network configuration? Are the DNS servers defined?

Correct, but it would tell him if the problem is local, or if someone else is dropping the ball. What if he tries to ping ? You mentioned viruses. Go to
Free online scan
and down in the lower left corner gives you the option for a free online scan. Run that and see if you do have viruses. Good luck.

His ping isn't failing due to a lack of connectivity ..

" IP is working fine and I can ping addresses on the Internet".

"If I know the ISP DNS servers are working and I can ping them .."

What he can't do is resolve DNS. If he tries 'tracert it just won't resolve the IP address.

"If I try to ping it says it cannot resolve."

1ontheway,
It's a fair bet that your ISP's DNS servers are working just fine, and so a better test would be to see if the DNS resolver on your machine works. Try an nslookup

nslookup
server <your_isp_DNS_server>

If that doesn't work try another server and see if you get the same result. If you get DNS resolution okay by querying the DNS servers in this manner then the problem lies with your DNS setup on your network card or dial up settings, whichever you are using, ie. no DNS servers defined.

Chris.
