Hi

I am installing 2003 server on a single machine with just one domain, and I have a question about the DNS,.

Currently our domain is hosted elsewhere and we will leave it like that for now, but later want to get exchange to run on this server.

So, should I use domain.com as my root domain when setting up DNS on the 2003 server now, or domain.local ? I've read up quite a bit about DNS but don't understand when you use the actual domain and when you use the .local ending.

Any tips much appreciated!

it is only used to 'avoid' confusion between public and internal DNS....sort of a 'note to self'.
However, you should use FQDN IF your ISP allows you to have Public DNS server and you are going to host DNS yourself. Rarely ISP will allow you to do so unless you are large comp....and rarelly would you want that load.

There was a thread858-576247 on 2k forum that will give you an idea of what is ahead of you depending on choice

All the best!
