Here's what I want to make happen...I suspect it's not a complicated thing to do.

If our company's email domain is currently abcpub.com and an MX record exists for it pointing the world to our email server... and we want the domain abcpublishing.com to also point to that same mail server...what DNS changes do I need to make?

I know what to do insofar as our email server is concerned but we don't have a DNS guy. In the end I want email sent to both bob@abcpub.com and now bob@abcpublishing.com to point to the same mail server.

Am I creating an ALIAS record of some kind?

Any help very appreciated.

Thanks

Just create an MX record for abcpublishing.com so it points to your mailserver.

Remember that you should not point a MX record to a CNAME record, you should point it to a A record.

Correct:

smtp.foobar.com. IN A 192.168.0.1
foobar.com. IN MX smtp.foobar.com.

Wrong:

server1.foobar.com. IN A 192.168.0.1
smtp.foobar.com. IN CNAME server1.foobar.com.
foobar.com. IN MX smtp.foobar.com.

It's an old rule, but to be safe follow it. :)

Thanks for your response. You do understand that our actual, currently active mail domain remains abcpub.com but we want mail sent to a users current address....bob@abcpub.com to also get to that user when sent to bob@abcpublishing.com? I'm not creating another mail domain nor another DNS domain, correct?

It's obviously critical I do this right so I don't interrupt our mail traffic.

So....

I'll create an MX record entering the following info in the following fields:

Host or child domain: abcpublishing.com

Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN): already populated with our mail domain (abcpub.com) *greyed out and uneditable

Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of mail server:mail.abcpublishing.com

I'll then create an A (host)record entering the following info in the following fields:

Name(uses parent domain name when left blank):smtp.abcpublishing.com

Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN): prepopulated with abcpub.com *greyed out and uneditable.

IP Address: Same IP address that's in the A record for smtp.abcpub.com...our actual mail domain.

Correct?

Thanks again.

Never mind. I think what I didn't get was that I need to create a new zone before doing all this.

Thanks
