Hi, I get that message when trying to join a windows server 2008 domain from an XP Pro pc. I just set up the server in a test environment. Some settings:

Server:
AD and DNS installed
Server name: server01
domain: jmg.com

XP SP3 pc
Can ping server by ip and by "server01.jmg.com"
Added server ip address to Preferred DNS server

Any suggestions on what else I need to do?

Thanks
Tim

When joining the domain you can either use the NetBIOS name or the FQDN for the domain (in your example JMG.com). Have you tried both methods? With NetBIOS not being routable you could run into issues depending on how your workstation is configured for NetBIOS name resolution.

What do you get when you type "nslookup jmg.com"? It should reply with a list of domain controllers for that domain. If it doesn't then there's something wrong with your DNS.

Also, be sure to verify that when you are doing an NSLOOKUP that the DNS server that it is querying is a DNS server that knows about the jmg.cocm domain. For example, if you type:
Code:
C:\NSLOOKUP jmg.com
Then your response should look like:
Code:
Server: SERVER01.JMG.COM
Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx <-- that should be the actual IP address of SERVER01

Name: JMG.COM
Addresses: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx <-- that should be the actual IP address of a DC in JMG.COM domain
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx <-- that should be the actual IP address of another DC in JMG.COM domain, if there are any

Thanks for the info! What I was doing wrong was joining:

server01.jmg.com

instead of just

jmg.com

when I entered "jmg.com" I got a login prompt!

Thanks
