i want to set up a network at home...
I got 3 computers 1 running win2k 192.168.0.1 (also connected to dsl)
another one running winME
and one running win98SE

my win2k server has 2 NICs and is connected to dsl.

Now my problem. i enabled sharing on the dsl connection.

i set up the other machines (98 and ME) to use the win2k machine as gateway and gave both an ip (192.168.0.2 , 192.168.0.3)

the internet works, but it takes about a minute to load a page or times out before that. it seems like a problem with the dns lookup but i cant find the error.

when i start a download its fast, so it cant be a bandwith problem. the network itself works (i can ping everyone from everywhere).

Is there anyone knowing what the problem could be?

thanks
rob

P.S.
i dont want to use a proxy cause ut doesnt work with icq/half life and other games

Hi,

Did you explicitly set the ip addresses of the ISP's dns servers on the Win98 & WinME boxes ? If DHCP is in use, the W2K box would probably have its dns configured dynamically so that would be fine. Irrespective of the default route, the other boxes, however, would not know which dns server to query to resolve names because they are not being configured dynamically.

Incidentally, on the proxy issue - with MS/Proxy server you can get things like icq working fine as long as you use the winsock proxy service. There are different types of proxy (http, socks, winsock) and the latter will remote all ip traffic for you (subject to local exclusions in the LAT file).

Rgds
