At the end of the rope. Short of killing the machine I cannot find a solution for what is happening. Yesterday ext. DNS queries will fail. About the time it failed got DNS errors 407, 408, 404, and 409. Rebooting the computer couple of times verifyed all settings then got errors 4015,4011. Followed the tech net solutions and getting the 407,408, and 408 errors again.

Internal DNS requests will wotk --IE companyweb

DNS monitoring running test "A recursive query to other DNS server" Fails

When frustrated remember, in the computer world there is almost always a backdoor.

Also ramdomly google or yahoo will resolve but as soon as I try another site it fails

So you have the server configured to point to itself for DNS, and you have root hints populated, and you've configured your ISP's DNS servers in your Forwarders areas?

Have you worked with NSLOOKUP at all to see if queries directly to your ISP's DNS servers are failing? Have you done any packet captures?

Also, I've heard of this actually being caused by outgoing recursive query UDP packets being dropped by the firewall, and irregularly at that. What type of firewall are you running?

What if you manually create forward lookup zones for the remote domains you care most about for the short term while you troubleshoot this? That will take of a bit of pressure if this server is in production.
